Position Summary

The Carolina Population Center (CPC) is an interdisciplinary research and training center under the Vice Chancellor for Research. The Center’s goals are to create new knowledge, develop new sources of data to support population research, promote the development and use of innovative methodologies, build skills and capacity, and disseminate data and findings to population professionals, policy makers, and the public. The center’s operating budget is derived from grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts awarded by federal agencies and private foundations, as well as from state funds. CPC conducts research in the United States and in more than fifty foreign countries. Its 66 faculty fellows hold appointments with sixteen UNC-Chapel Hill departments in the Schools of Arts and Science, Public Health, Medicine, and Business, representing a wide range of academic disciplines. Relevant CPC facts and figures for FY 2015-16 include: (1) CPC ranked first in awards among all centers and departments at UNC-Chapel Hill, with $86 million; (2) CPC’s expenditures totaled $65 million—of that amount, $62 million was derived from grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements from more than 30 sources outside of UNC; and (3) CPC generated over $8 million in indirect cost funding for UNC.

The Deputy Director for Finance and Administrative Services reports to the CPC Director, serves as the Center’s Chief Financial Officer, and manages the administrative operations of the Center. This position is part of the senior management team with the center’s Director and Deputy Director for Research Services and is responsible for (1) strategic planning; (2) fiscal management of the center’s grant portfolio; (3) compliance with university and funder policies; (4) center operations including human resources, grant management, space allocations, administrative and general services, and proposal preparation; (5) interactions with University administrators; and (6) supervision of a unit with 10 permanent staff.
