Position Summary

We are searching for a post-doctoral scholar in geography, spatial science, sociology, applied economics, public policy or a related field with skills in quantitative spatial and social science to collaborate on a newly funded NSF PIRE in energy poverty, defined as the lack of access to electricity and reliance on biomass fuels. The faculty leads for this project are Michael Emch (Geography), Barbara Entwisle (Sociology), and Pam Jagger (Public Policy), The geographic focus is Southern Africa, and the position will involve extensive fieldwork in Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The outcomes studied in this interdisciplinary program are diverse e.g., biomass use, deforestation, particulate matter emissions and exposure, and health impacts. The first year of the position will involve building and analyzing study datasets by integrating Living Standards Measurement Study, Demographic and Health Survey data, and other population representative data with satellite-derived land cover-land use and other spatial and environmental data, and using the data to analyze the state of energy poverty, energy transitions, and its implications. Subsequent years will involve managing teams to conduct quasi-experimental evaluations of interventions in collaboration with our African partners. The position will also involve supporting the PIRE PIs in managing the training program and fieldwork for graduate and undergraduate students. The position will be housed at the Carolina Population Center and part of a highly successful postdoctoral program based there. Additionally, there will be ample opportunities for connecting with a wider network of scholars and career development. The initial term of appointment is one year, reappointment for a 2nd and 3rd year is likely depending on contributions to the progress of the project. If interested, please contact Drs. Emch, Entwisle, or Jagger who can be directly contacted via email if desired.
