Position Summary

This position is project manager for the Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity, Socioeconomic Status, and Health across the Life Course Study (SOGI-SES). This project seeks to understand how socioeconomic resources and strains contribute to the health inequalities that sexual and gender minorities experience. This National Institutes of Health grant will build on ongoing data collection in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) Wave V project. The goals of the SOGI-SES project are to collect, clean, disseminate, and analyze new data from a subset of the Add Health cohort (sexual minorities, transgendered individuals, and a comparison sample of heterosexuals) via a web-based survey that will collect information about formative experiences specific to sexual orientation and gender development, and enhance existing prospective information about SES and determinants of SES. The project is based at the Carolina Population Center. This position oversees all activities at UNC and is the liaison to the project’s subcontractor, RTI, and a collaborator at UCLA. The research team includes experts in epidemiology, developmental science, biostatistics, sociology, and data collection/management.

This person will be a member of senior management, will be responsible for the project’s day-to-day research activities and overall coordination, will work closely with project faculty/staff, will be the liaison with the data collection subcontractor and will coordinate activities for all data collection. S/he will work with a variety of researchers/staff, must have a combination of scientific knowledge, research experience, and interpersonal and management skills. S/he will receive general guidance from researchers/senior staff and implements them with various individuals. S/he must be able to develop plans and field protocols, write clearly, supervise staff at UNC, and provide overall day-to-day management.

A demonstrated ability to work and collaborate within and across teams both inside and outside the organization is essential. S/he must have outstanding organizational and management skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to take the initiative on all aspects of the project.
