Position Summary
The Project Manager for the Transfer
Project: Learning How Social Transfers Work in Africa administered at
the Carolina Population Center (CPC;
cpc.unc.edu) of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be a
senior leadership position. The Transfer Project is an innovative
research and learning initiative that supports improved knowledge and
practice on social transfers in Africa, undertakes impact evaluations of
large-scale cash transfer programs in Africa, and creates mechanisms
for regional learning and exchange among policy makers, program
implementers, and researchers. The project manager will join a research
team that includes experts in public policy, economics, and public
health. The project manager will serve as a key member of the project’s
senior research team and will be responsible for the overall functioning
and coordination of the program of research as well as the outreach and
dissemination activities. This person will monitor and control project
workflow, timelines and budgets. S he will work with and coordinate the
activities of researchers, staff, and external consultants. S he will
also serve as project liaison with the funding agency, key counterparts (FAO, UNICEF, DFID) and with UNC
institutional review board, accounting, and human resources. The
project manager will collaborate in writing and preparing content for
dissemination to communities of practice, policy makers, and current and
potential funders. S he will also prepare progress reports and annual
work plans, and will work closely with research staff. This position is
available at either full- or part-time effort; the salary listed is for
full-time and will be prorated for part-time employment.
Educational Requirements
A master’s degree in public policy, social sciences or public health or related area is required.
Qualifications and Experience
A minimum of two years’ experience in
managing or directing a complex research project is desirable,
preferably within a university setting. Experience working in
international settings, particularly Africa, is strongly preferred.
Candidate must be able to develop implementation plans for research and
technical activities, write clearly, and coordinate activities among a
variety of individuals across different project themes. S he must have
outstanding organizational and management skills as well as excellent
interpersonal and communication skills. S he must be motivated and take
initiative. Experience working with research data and synthesizing
results is preferred. S he must be able to develop timelines and
budgets, anticipate and solve problems, prioritize competing demands,
and work independently. A demonstrated ability to work and collaborate
within and across teams both inside and outside the organization is
essential.
