Description of Work

The Research Associate will report to the principal investigator for the LINKAGES project. Individual will assist in the development and support of tablet based computer-aided personal interviewing (CAPI) systems for a variety of population-based surveys, impact evaluations, and surveys of key populations. Individual will also assist in the data cleaning, data management, and data analysis for various surveys.

The Research Associate will be expected to:
•Develop and maintain the data collection and processing systems for both CAPI and paper-based personal interviewing (PAPI) surveys.
•Monitor, process and clean data collected in the field.
•Perform data quality checks to ensure that collected data are linkable and accurately captured.
•Communicate with project technical staff and in-field staff to identify issues, provide feedback, and suggest solutions.
•Coordinate and standardize data collection and processing procedures across countries within an activity.
•Coordinate and standardize variable construction across countries within an activity.

The Research Associate may also be requested to:
•Travel internationally to train in-country staff (usually on the African continent) in tablet based data collection, as well as in further processing of these data.
•Participate in producing data analysis for country reports and other deliverables.

Education and Experience

Minimum Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, math, or Engineering or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or
• Bachelor’s degree and some computer coursework from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in business application consulting or development; or
• Associate’s degree in Computer Programming and one year of experience in application consulting or development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.
• Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•Strong demonstrable programming skills in SAS and Excel.
•Experience managing and maintaining large datasets.
•Strong organizational skills
•Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and as a team member.
•Ability to communicate with international staff, some of whom English is not their first language, in a culturally competent manner
•Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment.
•Availability to travel 10-15% of the time
•Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for the planning and management of complex data in a data-driven project.

Preferred Education and Experience:
•Master in Public Health or related field.
•Epidemiologic methods.
•Spatial analysis / ArcGIS.
•Surveillance methods.
•Experience with developing data capture systems in CSPro and/or ODK.
•Fluency in a second language of relevance (e.g., French, Spanish).
•Familiarity with all aspects of the survey research process in an international
context.
