About the History Project

The Carolina Population Center History Project was conceptualized, in part, to contribute to the Center's 40th anniversary celebration in 2006. CPC has a fortunate characteristic of having a solid institutional memory because many faculty and staff have been involved in the Center's activities over many years, some since its founding in 1966. Those persons, who became Fellows, Directors, and senior staff members, have already retired or are nearing retirement. Developed by Barbara Entwisle, CPC Director, the History Project was an organized effort to capitalize on their stories and their memories of CPC's early years.

Two primary research methods were used in gathering information for the History Project: oral history interviews and document discovery and review.

The oral history interviews were conducted by Grace Camblos, a graduate student in Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Seventeen persons were interviewed, some individually and some in small-group interviews. Most interviews were audio-recorded, and select interviews were video-recorded, resulting in over 20 hours of digital recordings. Each interview was transcribed, which elicited more than 450 pages of transcripts, and each was then coded for subject matter content.

Document discovery and review was conducted by Lori Delaney, CPC's Head Librarian. She reviewed primary documents available from CPC's administrative files including Center Grant proposals, Training Grant proposals, and numerous internal communications materials. She also examined materials about the Carolina Population Center that are in the University of North Carolina's Manuscripts Department and University Archives, including the photographic archives.

Led by Entwisle and Nancy Dole, Deputy Director for Research Services, the CPC History project was managed by Lori Delaney. The project was supported in part from funds made available from Tony Waldrop, UNC's Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development.
