Campus Copyright Rights and Responsibilities Guidebook

This document presents a primer on copyright law and provides guidance on specific copyright issues of common research, teaching, and learning activities in an academic community. The guide was prepared by those with diverse perspectives and applications of copyright, including the Association of American Universities, the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of American University Presses, and the Association of American Publishers.

UNC-CH Copyright Resources

The campus Copyright Committee has developed a copyright website for faculty and staff. The site has resources to educate faculty and staff about copyright, assist faculty members with decisions about what constitutes fair use, and gathered campus policies on copyright. Links to outside organizations and copyright education websites combine with the other material to create an important resource for scholarship, teaching and service.

U.S.Copyright Office

The U.S. Copyright Office website exists to provide resources, publications, and copyright application forms to the general public. With a database of online copyright records beginning in 1978, this site provides a user with answers to many of the questions that arise when dealing with copyright.

Copyright Clearance Center

Copyright Clearance Center, Inc., the largest licenser of text reproduction rights in the world, was formed in 1978 to facilitate compliance with U.S. copyright law. CCC provides licensing systems for the reproduction and distribution of copyrighted materials in print and electronic formats throughout the world.

The Copyright Website

The Copyright Website provides real world, practical and relevant copyright information for anyone navigating the net. A large portion of this site is dedicated to recent electronic copyright issues including mp3 audio files and mpeg video files. Also included are the basics of copyright law and current issues dealing with bleeding edge technologies on the web.

Public Domain Chart

This tool, developed by Lolly Gassaway (UNC Law Professor and Director of the Law Library), is useful for calculating when U.S. works pass into the public domain.

Association of American Publishers Copyright Resources

General resources including an Imprints List, Permissions Department contact names, best practices in processing permissions, etc.

CPC faculty, staff, and trainees may also contact library staff with questions about copyright issues.
