Andrew Olshan is interested in reproductive, pediatric, and cancer epidemiology. His interests and research have focused on the etiology of birth defects and cancer in children. He has been involved in epidemiologic studies of the role of paternal exposures and adverse health effects in children. He has just completed a five-year study funded by the National Cancer Institute to examine risk factors for the childhood kidney tumor, Wilms tumor. He recently finished a project exploring infection and genetic susceptibility markers and the risk of preterm birth using data and samples from the Pregnancy, Infection, and Nutrition study. Another project is examining the effects of drinking water disinfection by-products and male reproductive health. Dr. Olshan is the Principal Investigator of the CDC-funded, North Carolina Center for Birth Defects Research and Prevention. He is a North Carolina site co-principal investigator for the National Children's Study. He is lead instructor for the primary population course on reproductive epidemiology.
