Carolyn Tucker Halpern is an Associate Professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. She is a developmental psychologist, and her research interests center on adolescent social development and reproductive health, especially biopsychosocial models of sexual and romantic relationships. She is the Deputy Director of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, and has used those data to study patterns of romance, sexual behavior, intimate partner violence, and substance use in the transition from adolescence to young adulthood. She was a co-Principal Investigator on a collaborative international project between the Carolina Population Center and Ipas that used the Internet to survey and educate teens in Kenya and Brazil about reproductive health. Halpern teaches courses in adolescent health and theory. Her most recent publications appear in the Journal of Adolescent Health, Social Science and Medicine, Journal of Youth and Adolescence, and Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health.
