Michele Rivkin-Fish is a medical anthropologist and Associate Professor of Anthropology. Her research examines the cultural meanings and strategies with which vulnerable populations strive to ensure their health. She has conducted extensive ethnographic research in Russia on the ways women and health care providers have coped with the collapse of the social safety net and socialist health care system, as well as with state and international health policies to introduce reforms in the health care system. She has also examined the political debates and policies surrounding demographic change (fertility and immigration) in Russia. She is currently developing two new research projects. One examines the production of abortion stigma and its effects on women's health; the other examines the ethical socialization of American health professional students.
