Sharon Weir’s career has focused on methodological and behavioral aspects of infectious disease epidemiology, especially sexually transmitted infections; and she has published extensively on this topic. She has pushed the frontiers of identifying the population-level sexual networks through which HIV and other sexually transmitted infections pass. She has been working increasingly on population research and developed an innovative methodology to study sexual mixing in high transmission urban and rural areas in developing countries. The method is interdisciplinary and makes use of spatial analyses, qualitative methods, demography, and epidemiology. The method has already received wide acclaim and will be applied in at least fourteen cities or districts in eight countries with funding from multiple sources including USAID, the World Bank, UNAIDS, CDC an the World AIDS Foundation.
