J. Richard Udry is Kenan Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Maternal and Child Health and Sociology. He was director of the Carolina Population Center from 1977-92. His main research interest lies in the interaction of biological and social factors in reproductive behavior and in biosocial correlates of women's gender roles. He founded and currently serves as a consultant for Add Health, a large program project which is a national longitudinal study of the biological and social factors in adolescent health and behavior funded by the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development. Udry is a past president of PAA. In 1997 he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in recognition of his distinguished contributions to science and scholarship.
