Carri Casteel

Carri Casteel is a researcher at the Injury Prevention Research Center (IPRC) in the UNC-CH School of Public Health. She has a PhD in Epidemiology. She collaborated with the California Department of Health Services on an evaluation of a falls prevention program for older adults. The program was administered to community-dwelling older adults at high risk for falls in two rural counties in California. The program was a multifaceted intervention that included the elimination of domestic hazards, management of medication and alcohol use, development of lower limb strength and balance, and identification and treatment of existing vision and hearing impairments. The alcohol use components included education on alcohol risks and dangerous alcohol-medication interactions, focused counseling on alcohol abuse, and referrals to local cessation programs. Dr. Casteel participated in the Home Safety Council Technical Advisory Board Summit (2003) as a member of the IPRC home safety research team. She is collaborating on the analysis of multiple national datasets to examine trends in home injury death and morbidity.
