Pamela Haines

Pamela Haines, Associate Professor of Nutrition, UNC-CH, has examined how factors such as education, employment status, and life stage have affected changing patterns of eating in women across the life cycle. Focusing on mature women ages 50 and older, this work includes examination of determinants of dietary trends between 1965 and 1996, psychosocial predictors of healthful dietary change in a cohort of Women's Health Initiative participants, and development of new dietary assessment methods (the Diet Quality Index-Revised) with which to measure and monitor the overall quality of the diet as a chronic disease risk factor. Related work in community settings includes an ongoing examination of the presence of nutritional risk and the relationship to functional status in a sample of 250+ participants of the Title III Congregate and Home-Delivered Meals programs in two North Carolina counties.
