Plone terms
A glossary of terms for Plone 3.0 users
- add new...menu
- shows menu choices for adding content items (images, pages, folders, etc.)
- anchor
- a position marker within a document, e.g., a heading, subheading, or another style set, that enables efficient navigation within the text
- authenticated user
- a logged-in user who will experience the full functionality of the web site, customized to user's role
- breadcrumbs
- a navigation tool that shows your location in the site. It begins with the words "You are here:" and lists the levels above your current page. You may click on any level to jump to it.
- check out/check in
- creates a working copy of a previously published page to allow revisions behind the scenes
- collection
- a virtual container for content that offers an alternate organizational arrangement. Learn more in the Using Collections section of the Plone 3.0 User Manual.
- contents tab
- shows a list of all items in a folder
- dashboard
- user tool for customizing the personal interface. Learn more in the Setting Your Preferences section of the Plone 3.0 User Manual.
- external link
- a link to a website outside your own
- history
- the record of changes made to a page, which allows a compare or revert to previous version with a single click
- internal link
- a link to another location within your website
- Kupu
- the WYSIWYG content editor inside Plone, which allows authors to work with icons familiar from other word processors such as Microsoft Word
- link integrity
- a feature of Plone 3.0 that generates a warning when you attempt an action that would break a link and offers options to avert the problem
- portal
- gateway to web access that can be personalized to user preferences and customized to user roles
- portlet
- "window" on a portal page that displays externally generated content, e.g., events calendar, weather, news
- properties
- descriptive information about a content item that makes it more searchable, collectible, categorizable, and generally more useful. To learn more see the Setting Basic Properties section of the Plone 3.0 User Manual.
- private state
- the default state of a new content item, which allows viewing only by a logged in user with permission to view it. Private items cannot be located by a search or link.
- publish
- to move content into a public state, where it can be located by search, link, or navigation
- role
- the rights assigned to a particular user, e.g., member, manager, reviewer
- rules tab
- shows a panel for controlling how an item is created and managed
- sharing tab
- shows a panel for setting rights of other users to see or edit content
- skin
- the design of a Plone site, which is independent of the content
- state menu
- a menu located at the right of the edit panel for any content item, showing the menu choices available to the user for setting publication state (private, submit for publication, publish, etc.).
- title
- name of a content item (folder, image, page, etc.). The title becomes part of the web address (URL) for each item you create in Plone.
- versioning
- the capture of previous versions of a content item, in order to review its history, compare versions, revert, etc.
- view tab
- shows the view an anonymous web surfer would see
- visual editor
- a tool for editing content that allows WYSIWYG editing
- workflow
- the process of creating, reviewing, and publishing a content item. Plone's workflow can be customized for particular needs.
