Monitoring and Evaluation Activities for Malaria Prevention and Control in Ethiopia

Malaria remains the leading communicable disease in Ethiopia with over 5 million clinical cases of malaria reported annually. The Ethiopian Malaria Prevention and Control Program (MPCP) has set the goal of reducing the burden of malaria by 50% and eventually halting transmission of parasite infections by 2015.
MEASURE Evaluation provides technical assistance to Ethiopian scientists and health professionals in monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of malaria control and prevention activities supported by USAID under the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. The team, led by Tulane University in collaboration with the Addis Continental Institute of Public Health, works in partnership with the Oromia Regional Health Bureau, USAID, PMI partners, and other in-country stakeholders to:
- Ensure a continuous strong partnership with stakeholders for the coordination of M&E and control activities
- Finalize, adopt and implement the national malaria M&E strategy
- Maintain a network of 10 sentinel surveillance sites for the collection of routine malaria mortality and morbidity data in Oromia Region
- Develop a methodology to ensure that Health Management Information System data is utilized for decision-making
- Develop methodologies to track malaria-related commodities not tracked by other systems
