Staff Profile: Alexis Safari

Alexis Safari who works for MEASURE Evaluation in Rwanda.
Alexis Safari picWhether he’s referring to his work with MEASURE Evaluation or free time spent discussing ideas on root causes and alternative solutions to poverty in developing countries, it’s clear that Alexis Safari places a very high value on collaborating and engaging with others. “I love exchanging ideas with different people,” he said in a phone interview.

Alexis joined MEASURE Evaluation in Rwanda as Country Finance and Operations Manager at Futures Group International in 2008. His accounts include MEASURE Evaluation, Integrated Health Support System and AIDS Relief. He particularly enjoys his work for MEASURE Evaluation. “I am always interested in international expertise,” he said. “I get to work with different people from different countries, and I learn so much.”

His knack for collaboration has proven to be invaluable in his role at MEASURE Evaluation. He supports the Ministry of Health and the National AIDS Control Commission, which requires involvement in each of Rwanda’s 30 independent districts. “Each district has its own AIDS Control Committee coordinator, and I work with most of them,” Alexis explained.  “It’s challenging, but a very, very good experience, and I’m very proud of this work.”

Alexis first became interested in working with aid groups as a teenager, upon being exposed to international and non-governmental organizations providing support in Rwanda after the country’s genocide in 1994. “It was a very, very terrible time, but that’s how I started to learn about the work of these types of organizations,” he said.  “I started getting interested and thinking to myself, ‘How can I work for them?’  It was kind of an inspiration for me.”

Alexis went on to earn a B.B.A from the Kigali Institute of Science Technology and Management and an M.B.A. with International Finance and Banking concentrations from Washington International University. Before joining Futures Group and MEASURE Evaluation, he worked in a similar role for the UK Department for International Development.

Alexis lives in Kigali with his wife and two daughters. In his free time, he enjoys sports, particularly swimming, basketball and soccer. And his passion for working with others to improve his country extends beyond his work at MEASURE Evaluation. In addition to community-building activities as part of a post-genocide reconciliation club, Alexis cherishes the occasions to help others, particularly in rural areas. “I’m always interested in community development and poverty reduction, especially in rural communities,” he said.  “When I have the opportunity, I like to support people in improving their lives.”
