Nigerian Workshops Focus on Research to Improve Health Services

Report Conveys Importance of Gender Measures in Health Programming in Africa
In its Millennium Campaign, the United Nations stresses the importance of gender equity, child health and maternal health to ending worldwide poverty. However, most studies exploring the relationship between gender measures and health outcomes for women and children have neglected sub-Saharan Africa, even though Africa itself accounts for 58 percent of maternal deaths and 51 percent of deaths of children under the age of 5. In a recently released technical report, “Influence of Gender Measures on Maternal and Child Health in Africa,” written by Kavita Singh, Shelah Bloom and Paul Brodish, MEASURE Evaluation sought to fill this research gap.

Interlinked Patient Monitoring Systems Developed for Country Adaptation
The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners, with support from MEASURE Evaluation, have updated and expanded WHO’s 2006 Patient Monitoring Guidelines for HIV Care and Antiretroviral Therapy to promote the design and use of interlinked longitudinal patient monitoring systems that facilitate patient tracking and referrals between HIV care and treatment programs and other services. The revised guidelines are referred to as the Three Interlinked Patient Monitoring Systems for HIV Care/ART, MCH/PMTCT and TB/HIV or 3IPMS.
Two Virtual Leadership Development Programs Successfully Completed
To date, 22 teams in 15 counties, totaling 180 participants have successfully completed the Virtual Leadership Development Program to build leadership capacity of M&E managers in order to strengthen M&E systems and improve performance.
Workshop Provided Training on Micro-data Management Toolkit
Twenty-five health information science officers, data management specialists, and M&E specialists from public and private agencies received training on the Microdata Management Toolkit (MMTK), a metadata editor for documenting and preserving surveys and censuses.
