Margarita Mooney is a sociologist interested in immigrant adaptation, religion, youth and human development. In previous work, she used ethnographic methods to study how religion influences the adaptation of Haitian migrants in Miami, Montreal and Paris. She has also analyzed survey data to examine the academic achievement and social integration of Latino college students. Her present work, funded by the John Templeton Foundation, is a mixed-methods approach to the transition to adulthood using interview and survey data from the National Study of Youth and Religion. In this project, she will explore responses to stress, positive emotions, and virtuous relationships during the transition to adulthood. Using data from Add Health, she is also exploring whether religion influences exposure to stressful life events among young adults. She also collaborates with CPC fellow Ron Rindfuss in studying how human migration and tourism impact development and ecological preservation in the Galagapos Islands (Ecuador).
