Household Daily Food Master File

The CHNS Household Daily Food Master File (NUTR1) contains information regarding the household foods that were obtained, consumed, and discarded during the CHNS Diet Survey.  As a longitudinal file, it contains multiple years of data for each household.  A household can have from 1 to 8 years of data as designated by the WAVE variable, which includes the survey year, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, or 2009.  Each year will normally have multiple foods as designated by the FOODCODE variable.

This File consolidates seven separate diet survey files:

1989 1991 1993 1997 2000 2004 2006 2009
C89NUTR1 C91NUTR2 C93NUTR2 C97NUTR2 C00NUTR1 C04NUTR1 C06NUTR1  C09NUTR1

Certain variable names have been changed to be consistent across all survey years and not all variables contain information for all years.  (See the following Variable Name Mapping document.)

Some of the older household IDs are no longer current, as all members have moved to different households.  If there is a need to merge household level data with individual level data, the individual's previous ID must be used, depending on the survey year.

NOTE: Food amounts were collected in jins (500 grams) from 1989 through 2000. In 2004 and subsequent years, food amounts were collected in grams.

Individual Daily Meal Master File

The CHNS Individual Daily Food Master File (NUTR2) contains information regarding the individual meals that were eaten during the CHNS Diet Survey.  As a longitudinal file, it contains multiple years of data for each individual.  An individual can have from 1 to 8 years of data as designated by the WAVE variable, which includes the survey year, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, or 2009.  As a longitudinal file, all data for a single individual are provided using that individual's most current ID, even when they have belonged to more than one household.

This file consolidates seven separate diet survey files:

1989 1991 1993 1997 2000 2004 2006 2009

Individual Daily Nutrient Intakes Master File

The CHNS Individual Daily Nutrients Intake Master File (Micro_Nutrients) contains information regarding the individual nutrient intakes that were converted from foods consumed during the CHNS Diet Survey.  As a longitudinal file, it contains multiple years of data for each individual.  An individual can have from 1 to 8 years of data as designated by the WAVE variable, which includes the survey years 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, or 2009.  Each year an individual will normally have multiple foods per meal, multiple meals per day, and multiple days (1 to 3) per year.  As a longitudinal file, all data for a single individual are provided using that individual's most current ID, even when they had data from more than one household.
