National Children's Study: Duplin County Vanguard Center

Overview of the National Children's Study - North Carolina Study Center

The National Children's Study is the largest long-term study of the effects of social, behavioral, biological, community, and environmental factors on human health and development ever conducted in the US.

Study activities were funded in 2005 to begin in seven Vanguard Sites. Duplin County, NC, is one of those sites. Additional sites were funded in 2007 as Wave 1, and Rockingham County, NC, is in that group and in May, 2008, Burke County, NC was added to the Wave 1 group.

The National Institutes of Health have the option of funding the North Carolina Study Center to work in Durham County, NC, in Wave 2, and Buncombe County in Wave 3.

A team of researchers from CPC/UNC, Duke University, Battelle Memorial Institute, and McMillan & Moss Research are working together to plan and implement the study in these locations.

Ultimately, a national probability sample of 100,000 children will be identified, as early as possible in pregnancy. These children will be followed for 21 years to explore the causes of a variety of health problems including obesity, injuries, asthma, and developmental delays.

For details of the national-level activities, see the national website: www.nationalchildrensstudy.gov
