NCS North Carolina

The National Children's Study is the largest long-term study of child health ever conducted in the US. It will closely examine effects of social, behavioral, biological, community and environmental factors on children's health outcomes.

We are working together for children's health.

Researchers from the Carolina Population Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University and Battelle Memorial Institute are working together to plan and implement the National Children's Study in North Carolina.  Duplin County was one of two counties in the U.S. to begin enrollment in January 2009.  Durham County was one of thirty counties across the country to expand Study enrollment in 2011.  Enrollment for the cohorts in these two locations closed in March 2012.

Ultimately, a sample of tens of thousands of children will be observed for 21 years to explore causes of a variety of health problems, like obesity, injuries, asthma, and developmental delays.
