Data Availability

NSYR data sets available for use by permission only include:

Wave 1 Survey Data, 2002–03 (n=3,370) Wave 2 Survey Data, 2005 (n=2,604)
Wave 1 Interview Transcripts, 2003 (n=267) Wave 2 Transcripts, 2005 (n=120)

That the identity and confidentiality of NSYR respondents remain strictly protected is a central concern of NSYR and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Internal Review Board. For this reason, the distribution of data is limited in the following ways:

  1. Eligible researchers must have a PhD (or be currently pursuing one) from a college or university in the United States. The researcher’s institution must be an accredited institution of higher education, a research organization, or a government agency and must have a demonstrated record of using sensitive data according to commonly accepted standards of research ethics.
  2. Permission to use the NSYR data is largely based on the merit of the research proposal and whether prior access has been granted to another researcher studying that topic. The NSYR Principal Investigators reserve the right to deny any request.
  3. Data will be distributed only to certified researchers who commit to maintaining limited access.
  4. Eligible researchers must have a plan for handling and storing NSYR data and sign a data-use contract agreeing to keep the data confidential.
  5. Approved users of NSYR data will be required to renew their data-use application every three years.
  6. When an approved user desires to initiate new analyses on a topic not described in his/her approved data-use plan, s/he must submit a new research plan for approval. If approved, the new research plan will be appended to the existing data-use agreement, and all previously agreed upon data-use conditions will hold for the new analyses.
