Without understanding human variables such as distributions of population, sanitation, clean water availability, and socioeconomic distributions, it is difficult to truly understand the ecology of cholera; ecology includes humans as well as the aquatic environment.

Ultimately cholera is caused by people drinking water or eating food with Vibrio cholerae. Since there will likely be new toxogenic strains of cholera in the future, understanding this ecology is necessary to develop cost-effective interventions as well as good models of prediction.
