The growth of precarious work in the past 25 years represents a global challenge that has caused a series of consequences for workers, their families, communities, and nations. The so-called precarious work is a worldwide phenomenon, even though its most problematic aspects vary from country to country, depending on the level of development, social institutions, culture, and other national differences. Precarious work characterizes both the formal and informal sectors of the economy. Sociologists are well-prepared to explain, elucidate, and supply inputs to public policies on the nature and consequences of precarious work.
