CPC Predoctoral Requirements

Academic Year 2012 - 13

The following requirements apply to all CPC Predoctoral Population Trainees.

  1. Each trainee must actively participate in a continuing practicum under the supervision of one or more CPC Faculty Fellows. The research training plan for this practicum must be acceptable to the CPC Training Committee. Active involvement in the research and meaningful supervision are expected of the faculty supervisor; a minimum of 12 hours per week of research training experience through this practicum is expected of the trainee.
  2. Each trainee must complete an approved two-term sequence of courses in demography before or during the first year as a trainee. UNC courses meeting this requirement are SOCI 830/831 and BIOS 670/771.
  3. In addition to the two-term demography course sequence, each trainee must complete a minimum of six credits of approved population courses by the end of the second year of the traineeship. Approved population courses are designated by the CPC Training Committee.
  4. Each trainee is required to attend and participate in the CPC interdisciplinary population research seminars held each Friday at noon during the fall and spring semesters.
  5. Research required for the master's and/or doctoral degree, if begun while a traineeship is held, must focus on an accepted population topic.
  6. Each trainee must complete university required training in Human Subjects Protection by the end of the first month of the traineeship (https://www.citiprogram.org/default.asp).
  7. Each trainee must receive training in the ethics of research that includes participation in at least four seminars, lectures or class sessions each year that have been approved by the CPC Training Coordinator.
  8. Trainees are expected to submit a progress report at the end of each term and to maintain good progress in the doctoral program.
  9. All predoctoral trainees are expected to attend the annual Population Association of America meeting using travel funds provided by the traineeship. PAA 2013 will be held in New Orleans, LA on April 11-13, 2013.
