Department Description

The Carolina Population Center (CPC) is an interdisciplinary research and training center under the Vice Chancellor for Research. The Center’s goals are to create new knowledge, develop new sources of data to support population research, promote the development and use of innovative methodologies, build skills and capacity, and disseminate data and findings to population professionals, policymakers, and the public.

Its operating budget is derived from grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts awarded by federal agencies and private foundations, as well as from state funds. CPC conducts research in the United States and in more than 50 foreign countries. Its faculty fellows hold appointments with more than 15 UNC-Chapel Hill departments in the College of Arts and Science and in the Schools of Public Health, Medicine, and Business, representing a wide range of academic disciplines. For FY 2017-18, CPC received awards totaling $101 million, more than any other department. CPC’s awards received was larger than the combined awards of all other Centers and Institutes in the Research Division. Direct expenditures for CPC for FY 2017-18 totaled $80 million.

Position Description

The Research Administrator joins a team of five research administrators at the Carolina Population Center. Each research administrator is assigned a group of faculty fellows and serves as the chief point of contact for post-award administration. Pre-award activities assignments are determined by workflow and expertise. This position specializes in post-award research administration with 80% post-award and 20% pre-award. Post-award areas of expertise include CBM processing, IT purchases, and travel processing. In addition to grant administration, accounting functions for the Center’s state, F&A, and trust funds are provided by this position.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

This position requires strong quantitative skills, demonstrated proficiency in the creation and manipulation of Excel files, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to work independently, at a very high level, with little supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

Research administration experience in a university setting.
