The Carolina Population Center is a community of scholars and professionals collaborating on interdisciplinary research and methods that advance understanding of population issues. Carolina Demography is a unit of the Carolina Population Center that translates demographic data and analysis into specific usable information to support decision-making, planning, and program evaluation throughout North Carolina. Carolina Demography clients include local governmental agencies, educational institutions, business and non-profit organizations and the media.

Position Description

Serve as the primary communications specialist for Carolina Demography research. The initial focus will be on a research project concerning the North Carolina education pipeline from high school through postsecondary institutions and its relationship to individual economic mobility and the state’s forecasted employment needs. The communications specialist will promote and share project knowledge by helping to develop a communications strategy to communicate with clients and other significant stakeholders. The specialist will identify the best way to brand the education project specifically and Carolina Demography generally. The specialist will work with the Carolina Demography team to develop the education project website, redesign the current unit website, and identify continuous improvements based on user feedback. The specialist will also contribute to public in-person presentations by helping to identify appropriate content, presentation materials, and by preparing presentation scripts.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to a broad audience.

Understanding of the research process.
Experience with data-heavy subject matter.
Demonstrated ability to partner with other team members to guide projects to successful completion.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in developing podcasts, webinars, blogs, newsletters, and social media communications (esp. Twitter).
Experience in communications related to education and workforce research. Familiarity with North Carolina educational systems and policies would be a plus.
