Department Description

The Carolina Population Center ( is a community of scholars and professionals at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill collaborating on interdisciplinary research and methods that advance understanding of population issues.

Carolina Demography, a research unit within CPC, focuses on applied demography and outreach to the North Carolina community. Carolina Demography projects translate demographic data into information useful for understanding the implications of demographic change. Clients—including local government agencies, educational institutions, businesses and the media throughout North Carolina—use Carolina Demography analyses to inform their decision making, planning and program evaluation. Services include data acquisition and interpretation; data creation, such as custom-developed population estimates and projections; and data dissemination via presentations, blogs, fact sheets, and a variety of web-based media.

A major Carolina Demography project will look at expanding our existing database of data for North Carolina educational systems and developing a new website to support a variety of interactive data visualizations, analytic and reporting tools, data downloads, reports and supporting materials, and continuous improvement of the website based on user feedback.

Position Description

The primary responsibility of the Graphic Designer is to work with the Carolina Demography Director and communications, research, and web programming staff to create an integrated presence for Carolina Demography, with particular focus on the unit’s education pipeline website, print materials, and presentations. Depending upon CPC and CD workload, the Graphic Designer may also be assigned to support other projects and activities.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of visual/graphic arts experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Computer skills on a Windows (not Mac) platform and proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and Microsoft applications (Word and Powerpoint) are required.

Experience in data-heavy infographics. Additionally, the preferred candidate should be a self-sufficient designer with an excellent portfolio, have a strong sense of typography, a proven track record formatting technical reports with many graphics and tables, and be extremely detail-oriented, especially when working with numbers.
Demonstrated mastery of design, layout, typography and communication skills preferably through a portfolio of materials. The preferred candidate will have thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of planning, designing, and producing visually appealing products that communicate a clear message to target audiences.
The preferred candidate must also have demonstrated technical knowledge, good communication skills, and experience working within specific time frames and budgets.

Ability to work well as a member of a team is required.

Preferred Qualifications

HTML and CSS experience desirable. Experience with animation and video is a plus.

Ability to build email templates in MailChimp and social media templates in Adobe Spark, or similar programs.
