Using panel data from China Health and Nutrition Survey(CHNS),we employ OLS and quantile regression to analyze quantitatively individual income mobility in short term(2-4 years) and long term(8-9 years) between 1989 and 2006.Results show that the individuals in lower quantiles(the poor) have higher income mobility in both short term and long term. That is,the initial income of the poor has little effect on the final income. However, for the individuals in higher quantiles(the rich),the income mobility is low in short term,i.e.the rich are capable to keep their income in a high level. And this kind of capacity is stronger with the time.In long term, the income mobility of the rich decreased significantly after 1997.
