Positive, Negative, and Unintended Consequences of Nutrition-related Policies on Food Purchases: Pushing Nutrition Policy Forward

Project Summary

In recent years, there has been growing recognition of the need for policies to encourage both industry to offer healthier food options (supply) and consumers to make healthier food choices (demand). At the local level, an increasing number of local jurisdictions have been successful at adopting taxes on sweetened beverages. This study will evaluate the holistic impact of nutrition-related fiscal policies and programs (e.g., taxation, subsidies and incentives, and food assistance programs) on the public's overall diet and health. Findings from the study will inform nonpartisan nutrition policy development at the local, state, and federal level in the United States through the dissemination of academic publications, policy briefs, online data tools for public access, engagement of key stakeholders to support policy formation, development, and design.
