This paper reexamines changes in the distribution of medical insurance across socioeconomic groups in China over 1989-2006,based on micro-level longitudinal data China Health and Nutrition Survey(CHNS).The benefits provided by different types of medical insurance are also investigated.Finding indicates that after the implementation of New Rural Cooperative Medical Systems(NRCMS),the coverage rates increased,the rural-urban disparity narrowed and the disadvantages got better off in terms of accessibility to medical insurance.The reimbursement rates of all types of medical insurance in out-patient and in-patient cares decreased.The benefits varied substantially across three dominant medical insurance,with public medical insurance the most generous plan and the cooperative medical insurance the least.The analysis has important implications for the improvement on the distribution of medical insurance and the reform of social medical insurance system.
