White men with heart disease are far more likely to get a simple live-saving treatment than women or black men, two new studies from Duke University show. … “They have stereotypes about minorities and about women and about old people and young people. We all do,” said Jay Kaufman, a UNC-Chapel Hill epidemiologist who studies health-care disparities. Kaufman was not involved in the defibrillator study. “It doesn’t mean that physicians are bad people. But physicians are the ones who have to write it down and have their judgments studied.”
