Following the 2010 census, North Carolina lawmakers will be responsible for redistricting the state to better reflect the new population data. In an editorial column for The News & Observer, CPC Fellow James H. Johnson, Jr. and co-author Stanley D. Brunn emphasize the importance of redistricting based on principles of sustainability rather than the more traditional factors, which are primarily race and political affiliation.
