Summary

This research project focuses on mapping and analyzing health care access and utilization in Michigan, within the framework of the state's Certificate of Need (CON) program as administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Largely, the aim of this research is to develop, improve, and implement the methodologies used to forecast Michigan's health care needs for a variety of CON-covered services, as well as working with policymakers and stakeholders to improve health care costs, quality, and access for Michigan's residents. This research also examines how the spatial distribution of people and health care facilities throughout the state affect the population's access to care and utilization of services. Lastly, this work provides support to MDHHS for various GIS-related tasks, including custom mapping projects and maintaining an online geocoding service.
