Abstract

The relationship between infant and child mortality and subsequent fertility at both the aggregate and the familial level has long interested demographers, sociologists, and economists. The idea that mortality decline precipitates fertility decline has its origins in the historical demography of Europe and is a linchpin of demography transition theory.
