SIR-As noted in The Lancet, the current political andeconomic climate has extracted a heavy price in ill-health from many African populations. The twin evils of structural adjustment, imposed externally by the World Bank, and the social disintegration brought on by the abusive rule of thelocal power elite, have reached into every aspect of life. Evidence of deteriorating health among vulnerable segments of the population, especially pregnant women and children, has been noted.URL
