Abstract

Stigma reduction is essential for reaching global goals for ending the HIV epidemic, and HIV researchers have paid increasing attention to the intersectional nature of stigma. In Workable Sisterhood, Berger first defined intersectional stigma as the relationship between interlocking forms of oppression (i.e., intersectionality) and the ways in which people become socially defined as “other” (i.e., stigma). She illustrates how HIV stigma compounds structural inequities along axes of race, class, and gender for marginalized women living with HIV.
