Increasing Inpatient Mobility: A Path to Overcoming Challenges with Implementation. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 72(1), 290-293.Abstract
Individuals age 65 and older are hospitalized at three times the rate of those age 45–64, and account for 40% of hospitalized adults. Hospitalized older adults spend upwards of 95% of their stay confined to a bed or chair and engage in less than 1 h daily of any type of physical activity. Restrictive activity orders intended to reduce falls are associated with an increased risk of delirium, pressure injuries, functional decline, prolonged length of stay, readmission, and discharge to nursing facility. Despite evidence supporting early mobilization for older adults, few hospitals implement these practices.URL
