Abstract

Recent fertility and migration processes in Latin America have been associated with dynamic rural landscape transformations. These processes have left their most salient imprint on the massive conversion of the regions’ forests to agriculture. Indeed, while North American has experienced forest regeneration with the increasing efficiency of farming techniques and a declining rural population working the land, Latin America’s forests have atrophied rapidly.
