Abstract
No place on earth is as readily caricatured by Westerners as Singapore, the small rich Southeast Asian island‐nation just off the southern coast of peninsular Malaysia. No chewing gum. Fines for not flushing toilets. Caning for minor offenses. Draconian penalties for drugs. Disneyland with the death penalty, as cyberpunk writer William Gibson famously puts it in an article in Wired in 1993
