Abstract

MARRIAGE AND FERTILITY ARE INTRICATELY INTERTWINED-normatively, theoretically, and empirically. Normative expectations about marriage and child-bearing have shaped theoretical and empirical assumptions regarding the relationship between these two processes central to family formation. Perhaps the most obvious example of this has been the traditional tendency to design fertility studies based on universes of married women.
