Abstract
I am not an impartial bystander to the article "A Comparison of Two Indices of Adequacy of Prenatal Care Utilization," by Delgado-Rodriguez et al, since I am the author of one of the two indices (the APNCU index) being compared. I am, however, very concerned about the interpretation presented. The authors concluded that "the Kessner index is better for discriminating or predicting low birthweight risk than the APNCU index." Interestingly, I agree with their statistical findings; but I believe their interpretation that these findings make the Kessner index3 the better measure of the actual relation between prenatal care (PNC) utilization and birth outcomes is wrong.
