The May 2 publication of the leaked draft of the Supreme Court majority decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization indicates that the Supreme Court plans to explicitly overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

While the draft opinion is not yet final 26 states are likely or certain to ban abortion if the Court issues a similar decision in June. Amanda Jean Stevenson’s research, published in Demography in 2021, indicates that the pregnancy-related mortality impact of a total abortion ban would increase deaths, with the greatest increase in deaths occurring in Non-Hispanic Black people. Many other studies document the links between adoption of restrictive abortion policies and increases in maternal morbidity and mortality in the US and in other settings.
