Summary

This page provides STATA .do files for creating the dataset and analysis for the article “How Sexism in Institutions and Everyday Interactions Shapes Early Childbearing” by Jessica Su and Kelly Musick.

How to create the dataset and replicate the analyses:

  1. Access and download raw data files. This study uses restricted data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). The extensive restricted-use data, available by contractual agreement, contains data for all study participants and will be distributed only to certified researchers who commit themselves to maintaining limited access. To be eligible to enter into a contract, researchers must have an IRB-approval letter, security plan for handling and storing sensitive data, and sign a data-use contract agreeing to keep the data confidential. To learn more about the restricted-use data and how to apply for restricted-use data, please access the CPC Data Portal: https://data.cpc.unc.edu/projects/2/view
  2. Download the .do files posted on this site.
  3. Set up folders
    1. Wave 1 (include the following Add Health data files: allwave1, context1, Homewt, w1homewc)
    2. Wave 4 (include the following Add Health data files: wave4, sect18)
    3. Wave 5 (include the following Add Health data files: wave5, W1_5GRP)
    4. Constructed (include the following Add Health data files: famst)
    5. Raw data (empty; this will be populated after running 1_sas_dta.do)
    6. Clean data (empty; this will be populated after running .do files 2-6)
    7. Log files (empty; this will be populated after running .do files 1-6)
    8. Do files (include the .do files 0-7 posted on this site)
  4. Update global file paths in the .do files. These are found in the first 20 lines of code in the .do files.
    1. Wave 1 (global w1path in 1_sas_dta.do)
    2. Wave 4 (global w4path in 1_sas_dta.do)
    3. Wave 5 (global w5path in 1_sas_dta.do)
    4. Constructed (global construc in 1_sas_dta.do)
    5. Raw data (global raw in 1_sas_dta.do and 2_clean_data.do)
    6. Clean data (global data in .do files 2 through 7)
    7. Log files (global log in .do files 1 through 7)
    8. Do files (global do in .do files 0 through 7)
  5. Run 0_master.do to run files in order, from 1-7, to replicate the results.
