To most outsiders, the northern Central Plateau region of Burkina Faso looks degraded. There are widespread gullies, vast areas of bare soil, and fields filled with dead trees. Scholars of Sahelian West Africa have long considered this area to be a classic example of desertification. During the severe Sahelian drought of 1968–72, the northern Central Plateau figured prominently in the formulation of desertification as a scientific concept.URL
