Abstract

In this article, the author discusses his experience adapting a scale while conducting an ethnography of childbearing motivation in central Honduras. He argues that the goals of scale adaptation and ethnography overlap and that the combination of both activities improves field data collection. The author discusses how this combination improves validity and reliability in ethnographic fieldwork. He presents this argument with a detailed description of the steps he took to adapt an instrument to measure what he calls "natality culture" in central Honduras.
