How do we obtain the best information from study participants or patients to understand health? Clinicians and researchers ask questions to assess health status, but they are not always the best questions to solicit information that will inform clinical care or health policies. The article by Lockhart et al. (BJOG 2013;DOI:101111/1471-0528.12229) describes the process by which they developed a questionnaire to address ‘the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of vulval intraepithelial neoplasia, and demonstrates the need for a multistep approach to obtain the best information from participants involved in research. The process the authors used takes time, and it can vastly improve the reliability and validity of the data collected.URL
