This article reviews the long-standing analytic problem in period and cohort analysis in demography about the conceptualization, estimation, and interpretation of the differential contributions of distinct time-related changes attributed to period- and cohort-based sources of change in demographic phenomena. It introduces innovative approaches that emerged in recent methodological and substantive research on this problem using three common research designs and the generalized linear mixed effects modeling framework. It also outlines some promising areas of study that employ and extend these approaches in various important topics in contemporary demography.URL
