Abstract
Providing and documenting adequate training in laparoscopy has been an unaddressed matter of concern since laparoscopy became widespread in the 1970s. Part of the problem was slow acceptance of the method in academic training programs compared with enthusiastic acceptance in the private sector of medicine. In the United States, thousands of private physicians were providing laparoscopic sterilization to their patients by the mid-1970s.
