Abstract

This paper quantifies mangrove forest cover change in the Sundarbans of southwest Bangladesh from 1989 to 2000 using Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite imagery. We used three image processing techniques: normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI), maximum likelihood classification, and subpixel classification. We compared change detection results using the three image processing methods. Traditional classifiers, such as maximum likelihood algorithms, do not reveal the true nature of this mixed water‐forest environment. Both NDVI and subpixel classification revealed similar spatial distributions of areas that were deforested from 1989 to 2000. These areas are in the southeastern comer and the western edge of the Bangladesh Sundarbans.
